Neither link actually gave "instructions" from what I saw; one link was hearsay and the other was largely gloating with vague references to the mechanics.

Based on comments on the previous page and the linked one, it seems they used a third-party program to change the code for items given by book NPCs. Each book has an identifier code, which is used by the dialoge option to choose which you want. The program apparently changed the code being sent via that option, thus generating different items.

Because of how the book NPCs operate, this meant there was no cost, but any item produced was customized, just like books.

The fix was most likely focused on preventing players modifying that code, so they can only receive books again.

That makes sense to me. It's amazing how long it was possible for. Rather scary.

I believe the reason the link was taken down was because it goes to a forum which has public downloads for bots.

Wouldn't it have been possible to create these items using the Rune of DOOM NPC in the desolation? That way it wouldn't be customized like books are.

Dont think we should go ahead and try to think of new ways to destroy the game.

The point is that you can only do it with things where you send the items Id AND Anet forgot to add the check.

Crafters/Traders/Collectors all have the correct checks in place, therefore you can't do this bug with them.
There are many places you can receive an item for free, but I'm pretty sure that handbooks are the only ones where you have a choice of several items and submit the Id. Since the checks for these are now in place, it's impossible to do this bug any-more.

Also, if it were still possible then the exploiters would surely not release details of how it was done.

Why not? It's been proven to be the only way to get ANet's attention.

The botting situation in JQ, for example, has been there for over two years now and has ramped up in ferocity in the last 12-16 months to the point that you literally have to be utterly retarded not to see it, and yet "getting progressively worse" is an understatement of the highest degree.
And that's not even getting to the publically available/free interrupt and monk bots.

Looking for holes and bugs in a game != promoting the use of exploits.
I've always highly regarded people who got into the tech details of a game so much that they can find and use a bug in the game's very system. Their level of understanding the stuff behind it, as well as their level of interest in the game itself, is truly noteworthy.
But. This is when they should report their findings to the developer. And the developer should acknowledge their honesty about a particularly nasty bug they've found but decided to notify the dev instead of exploiting it, by commemorating and promoting the 'honest crackers' in a way. For those who look for, find and then use bugs and holes in MMOs for their own gain, though, there's only the banhammer.
